Telling Time with Tarot

Time telling during readings may not seem immediately obvious when you first start reading cards. But let’s face it, once we know something is going to happen, most of us want to know when that something is going to happen. A few quick guidelines can make it much simpler and add value to readings.

First, let’s start with seasons, which are indicated by the Aces. The Ace of Wands indicates fall for the US or autumn for most everyone else. The Ace of Cups represents summer. The Ace of Swords indicates winter. And finally, the Ace of Pentacles would point to spring.

Each suit represents a period of time. Wands are days, cups are weeks, swords are months, and pentacles are years. The number of each card then applies to the time period. For example, the Three of Wands would indicate that an event will occur in three days’ time. The Three of Swords would indicate a three-month time period. Let’s say a client wanted to know if they would be getting married, and the draw was the Three of Cups, the celebration/wedding card. If the Three of Pentacles was drawn upon asking when this happy event may occur, this would indicate the happy event would take place in three years.

Court cards are tied to astrological signs and the associated time periods. These are as follows:

  • December 22 – January 19: Capricorn – Page of Pentacles
  • January 20 – February 19: Aquarius – Queen of Pentacles
  • February 19 – March 20: Pisces – Page of Cups
  • March 21 – April 19: Aries – King of Wands
  • April 20 – May 20: Taurus – Page of Swords
  • May 21 – June 20: Gemini – King of Pentacles
  • June 21 – July 22: Cancer – King of Cups
  • July 23 – August 22: Leo – Queen of Wands
  • August 23 – September 22: Virgo – Queen of Swords
  • September 23 – October 22: Libra – King of Swords
  • October 23 – November 21: Scorpio – Queen of Cups
  • November 22 – December 21: Sagittarius – Page of Wands

And finally, drawing a Major Arcana card indicates the need to adopt a problem-solving approach. While there’s no defined timeline, it’s essential to address the underlying issue indicated by the card before progress can be made and a time frame applied to your concern.
