Fake It Till You Make It

Have you heard that before in your life? I know that I have, many times. One that I recall clearly was a discussion at work, many, many years ago. I think it was close to 30 years ago. I was in an office with outside sales staff. I wasn’t in sales; I have always gravitated towards marketing. Sales, especially outside sales, can be a rough go sometimes. You may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed, but you can’t bring that attitude to your customers that day. That was the context of the discussion about “fake it till you make it,” way back then. One of the ladies was talking about how she would intentionally smile at everyone she saw on her way to work whenever she wasn’t feeling happy because she knew that simply acting like she was cheerful on the outside would elevate her mood connecting her to some happiness on the inside.

I am writing about this idea because I heard the expression again today. I was watching Shawn Leonard speak in a replay from a recent Hay House presentation; Mystical Connections. If you are unfamiliar, Shawn Leonard is a heart-centered Mi’kmaq psychic medium and the star and host of APTN TV’s show Spirit Talker. He was doing a live reading for a woman who was being directed to do activities that traditionally would bring her joy from her ancestors. In the present moment, she was unable to find joy in her life. That’s where ‘fake it till you make it’ came in. It wasn’t in a callous manner; it was delivered with love from her spirit family. In taking up activities that traditionally brought her joy, she would reconnect with her personal sense of happiness.

Along with changing your outlook, by faking it till you make it, you embrace the role of creator – you are actively participating in the creation of your reality. In this lifetime, we are all co-creators with our higher power; God, Goddess, Universe, Source, whatever name you have for this. That’s a significant part of our role on this earth. This isn’t an original idea, and I don’t claim it as my own. There are so many great speakers out there who can elaborate more on this, and I may even do it in a future blog post. But for now, just know that it is your responsibility; even your purpose, in your life to create and to actively ‘forge’ the path of your life.

Sit with that for a minute because I’m going to try to tie this up into Tarot reading, but in and of itself, this is a really big thought, and I’m hoping it will take hold in your awareness. Theoretically, if you’re reading this, the message is meant for you, maybe not today – but someday, and it will be useful to you.

Back to Tarot cards, co-creation of your life, and finally – Fake It Till You Make It. When I was considering Tarot reading as a personal business, I knew that reading for people I didn’t know was an important way to learn if I was ready. It’s really interesting to see what people ask. If you are consulting a tarot reader – there’s usually a situation or area of your life causing concern and that you feel is being heavily influenced from the outside. I know! I got into Tarot cards because I loved getting readings. So often people go to a reader looking for ‘what will happen’ as if they have no personal control or free will. But as a reader, it’s important to communicate to the querent (person getting the reading) that you are the co-creator of your life and whatever is in the reading is guidance, and not set in stone. Outcomes can change if you don’t like them. They can change by your active participation in your life. This isn’t to say that you can hold onto a specific job or relationship or keep a loved one alive longer than they are meant to be here in this world. What you can do is let go of a job that no longer serves you, opening up to a better one where you will blossom, let go of the partner who doesn’t match your energy so that you can make the connections that will bring growth, learn to connect to your ancestors in spirit, and so on.

A Tarot reading can help you ‘fake it till you make it.’ You can ask for guidance from the cards about a situation, and the cards can reveal to you what you may not be seeing. We’ve all been there, right? Holding tightly to the partner but wondering why they aren’t available like they used to be, then seeing the Three of Swords when you ask why. Learn that this is so you will become less confused about what is happening and can take the next step on your journey or what you are to be learning from this. Taking control, embracing what is, even when it is painful, then letting go and faking it till you make it will help you find your joy again, reconnect with the love that’s inside of you, in all of us, that comes from Source – the ultimate in ‘making it’.
