Protecting Your Home with Palo Santo and Salt

I was recently asked by a friend of mine what could be done to clear a home of negative energy. They had a continuous ‘ick’ feeling that they weren’t able to shake and they really wanted it to go a way – and stay away. My first suggestion was to smudge. There are many different materials available to smudge a home including sage, palo santo, copal, lavendar, cedar, rosemany, crystals, salt and more.

I recommend palo santo because it is easy to work with for a first time smudging and the scent is lightly fragrant and very calming. You can easily find palo santo at most crystal and tarot shops and from many online sources. It is excellent for clearing negativite energy, restoring peace and serenity to your space. I also recommend adding salt to the mix which will amplify the protective energy of Palo Santo.

Unlike sage smudge sticks which are made from wrapped bundles of many pieces of dried white sage, palo santo is a well dried, single piece of wood, about 1/4″ to 1/2″ square or rectangle and 4″ or more in length. A palo santo wood piece fits into your hand like a wand, so you can hold onto it easily, lighting it at one end then moving it around your space to spread the smoke where ever it is needed.

If you want to clear and protect your home, workspace or any area from negative energies, get yourself some palo santo, a fireproof surface for your stick, salt for added protection and follow the directions below.

Light the stick, then let it go out on its own. The stick will smoke, which is what you use to cleanse your space. Hold the stick in your hand(s), visualize your intentions, and allow the sacred smoke to fill your space. The short burn will smoke for quite a while, delivering a lightly fragrant, pleasant smokey scent, cleansing the energy around you, restoring peace and calm. I like to walk through my home and direct the smoke to the walls of each of the rooms, so the entire perimeter is covered. If you don’t have the time to do this or are doing a smaller space or single room, this is not required, simply do your best to direct the smoke so that it reaches to the ‘farthest corners’ of the area you are clearing.

The smoke is important – but your intention is the key that makes this protection ritual work. It is critical to the smudging ceremony that you set your intention before and while you are smudging. If your intention is to remove any negative spirits, entities or energies from the house, be sure to open a window when using the palo santo so that they can leave. Then as you release the smoke throughout the house you can say – ‘remove all negative spirits, entities or energies with this smoke and create a barrier so they cannot return. Allow only positive energies to enter this home including joy, peace, abundance and happiness.’ keep repeating this until you’re finished.

After you have covered your whole home or area, close any open windows leaving some smoke to remain in your home. Finish the ritual with a prayer of gratitude for the help from spirit/source in removing the negative energies and protecting your home going forward. When you’re done with your stick, put it on a fireproof surface (one good option is a metal fireproof bowl with a bit of sand in the bottom), and it’s ready for the next time you want to smudge. Because of the slow-burning nature of palo santo wood, you will be able to reuse a single stick many times, so don’t be shy, spread the love.

As well as protection, you can smudge with palo santo for spiritual purification, to inspire creativity, good fortune, and positivity. Use it to deepen your connection to the divine source, to protect yourself from negativity, and to heal yourself from all manner of physical* and spiritual ailments.

After cleansing the home with palo santo, I recommend that you add salt for additional protection. Below are just a few simple ways to add salt into your smudging practice.

If the negative energies have been particularly strong or difficult to remove, you can place small bowls of salt in the center and in the corners of a room to provide a cleansing effect. There are also a few alternative methods that use a little less salt or that you can combine with placing small bowls of salt in each room.

  1. Create a barrier to negative energy at the entrances to your home by adding a line of salt just in front of your threshold.
  2. Cleanse rooms periodically with a salt spray. Grab an empty spray bottle and a jar of sea salt. Dissolve about a tablespoon of sea salt per cup of warm water, then pour it into the spray bottle and shake well.
  3. Use salt to create a protection jar for your home. To create a protection spell jar, simply layer your jar with salt and other protective herbs like Rosemary, Sage, Mint, Cinnamon, Basil and clove seeds. Once done, make sure to charge this jar with your intention. You can place this protection jar under your bed, on a windowsill or in a prominent area of your home like your living room.
  4. Sprinkle small amounts of salt in the corner of each room or in the corners of the home.

Just as it is when you smudge, It is important to set your intention before and while you are doing any of these activities. You will gain confidence and and become clearer at setting your intentions with ever smudging, purification, energy clearing or protection ritual your perform. Do the same if you spray the rooms with salt water, etc.

Finally, don’t forget to say a prayer of gratitude for the assistance of Spirit or Source. It is our intention and our gratitude that give power to our rituals and ceremonies. Spirit is more than willing to work with us, but we must invite them in and participate. So mote it be.
