How to Prepare to Read Tarot Cards for Others: A Comprehensive Guide

Reading tarot cards for others is a much different experience than reading for self reflection or to answer personal questions. It requires not just knowledge of the tarot cards and their symbols, but also sensitivity, intuition, and respect for the querent (the person seeking the reading). Whether you’re an experienced tarot reader or new to sharing your insights with others, proper preparation is essential. Here’s how you can get ready to provide the most insightful and meaningful tarot readings.

1. Create a Sacred Space

Before beginning any tarot reading, it’s important to create a sacred space that fosters concentration and openness. This space can be anywhere: a dedicated room, a corner of your living space, or even a virtual setup if you’re reading online.

  • Cleanse the Area: Use sage, incense, or a cleansing spray like Florida water, to clear any negative energies.
  • Set the Mood: Light candles or incense, dim the lights to create a calming atmosphere. Play soft, instrumental music if it helps you and your querent relax.
  • Organize Your Tools: Arrange your tarot deck, a cloth or mat to lay the cards on, and any other tools (crystals, a notebook, etc.) neatly.

2. Ground and Center Yourself

Grounding and centering help you connect with your inner wisdom and the energy around you. This practice ensures that you approach the reading with a clear, focused mind.

  • Meditate: Spend a few minutes in meditation to calm your mind. Focus on your breath or use a guided meditation if you prefer.
  • Visualize Roots: Imagine roots growing from your feet into the earth, anchoring you firmly. This visualization helps you stay grounded and present.
  • Establish a Protective Boundary: Visualize a white light emanating from your heart chakra and connecting with source. Envision this white light then surrounding and protecting you like a shield, repelling any negative energies.
  • Set Intentions: Clearly state your intention to provide a helpful and insightful reading for your querent.

3. Connect with Your Deck

Your tarot deck is your main tool, and connecting with it can enhance your readings.

  • Shuffle Mindfully: As you shuffle the cards, focus on the question or the energy of the reading. This helps infuse the cards with the specific intentions of the session.
  • Cut the Deck: Have your querent cut the deck if they are comfortable. This act can symbolize their direct involvement in the reading.
  • Draw with Intuition: Trust your instincts when drawing cards. Your intuition is a key component in providing a meaningful reading.

4. Engage with Your Querent

Communication is vital when reading for others. Engage your querent to make them feel comfortable and to understand their needs.

  • Discuss the Question: Make sure you and your querent have a clear understanding of the question or the topic of the reading.
  • Set Boundaries: Explain your reading style and what they can expect. Set boundaries regarding sensitive topics if necessary.
  • Encourage Openness: Encourage your querent to be open-minded and honest. Their openness can significantly impact the reading’s depth and clarity.
  • Talk: Explain what you’re doing as you do it. I like to explain the layout I will be using and the meanings of each position before I even draw a card. This invites the querent into the process with you.
  • Have Fun: you won’t find this in other ‘tarot how-to’s’ but I like to have a little fun with people because being comfortable and relaxed is so important to foster a connection. One of my favorite things to do is gasp or let out a little Oh My! under my breath, usually around the Near Future position of the Celtic Cross. This always captures the questioners attention, then I tell them I’m just kidding around this usually gets a laugh, and the tension drops noticeably.

5. Interpret with Compassion and Clarity

As you interpret the cards, strive to provide clear and compassionate insights.

  • Explain the Cards: Describe each card and its traditional meanings. Then, explain how it relates to the querent’s question or situation.
  • Trust Your Intuition: Your intuition will guide you to nuances and insights that go beyond the card meanings. Trust these feelings and share them thoughtfully.
  • Stay Neutral: Avoid projecting your own opinions or judgments. Focus on what the cards reveal and how they can help the querent.
  • Discuss Free Will: It’s important to cover the role of free will in a person’s life, particularly if it is a difficult reading for your querent. Explain that the future isn’t fixed, and even if events unfold as predicted, their reaction can be shifted to alter the outcome.

6. Offer Guidance and Support

A tarot reading should leave the querent feeling supported and enlightened.

  • Provide Practical Advice: Offer actionable advice based on the reading. Help the querent understand how they can apply the insights to their life.
  • Encourage Reflection: Suggest that the querent reflect on the reading over time. Sometimes, the true meaning of the cards becomes clearer after some contemplation.
  • Be Available for Follow-Up: Let the querent know they can reach out if they have further questions or need clarification. I like to suggest the querent take a picture of the layout and then if they have questions regarding a specific card or placement, it’s easier to remember.

7. Close the Session Respectfully

Ending the reading with respect and gratitude ensures a positive experience for both you and the querent.

  • Thank the Cards: Show gratitude to your tarot deck for its guidance.
  • Close the Space: If you performed any rituals to open your sacred space, reverse them to close the session. For example, extinguish candles or say a closing affirmation.
  • Reflect: Take a few moments to reflect on the reading. Note any insights or patterns that emerged, as they can help you grow as a reader.

Reading tarot cards for others is a profound way to offer guidance and insight. By preparing thoughtfully and approaching each reading with respect, you create an environment where meaningful and transformative experiences can flourish. Happy reading!
