A Midsummer Night at Stonehenge
This week’s blog posts have centered around the various ways people around the world celebrate the Summer Solstice. This highly significant celestial event is now less than a week away, Thursday, June 20th, 2024 at 3:50 PM CST. In the June 10th post, “Here Comes the Sun!”, we touched on many various celebrations tied to the solstice. I am currently writing in more detail about these unique celebrations and customs. So far, we have traveled to the Arctic Circle, South America and Europe. Today we are going to Great Britain, to Stonehenge; one of the world’s most recognized sacred sites, to see how the solstice is celebrated.
Stonehenge, a monument shrouded in mystery, ignites the imagination like few others. This summer solstice, why not experience its magic firsthand? Every year, thousands gather to celebrate the longest day under the ancient sky. Here’s what you can expect:
A Touch of the Mystical:
Summer solstice coincides perfectly with Stonehenge’s alignment. Witness the sun rise majestically behind the Heel Stone, casting an ethereal glow upon the stones. It’s a sight that transcends time, a reminder of the ingenuity of our ancestors.
A Celebration of Community:
The solstice at Stonehenge is a vibrant mix of cultures and traditions. From modern pagans to curious history buffs, you’ll find a shared sense of awe as the first rays pierce the horizon. Expect music, drumming, and a festive atmosphere.
Plan Ahead for a Smooth Experience:
This is Stonehenge’s busiest time. Managed access is offered by English Heritage, ensuring a safe and respectful experience for all. Prepare for a walk from the visitor center to the stones (wear comfortable shoes!), and consider using the shuttle bus service.
Beyond the Sunrise:
While the sunrise is a highlight, the entire experience is special. Explore the Stonehenge exhibition at the visitor center, unraveling the secrets of this Neolithic marvel. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the surrounding countryside – it’s a perfect way to soak in the atmosphere.
Livestream Option:
Can’t make it to England? No worries! English Heritage offers a live stream of the sunrise on their Youtube channel. Witness this astronomical marvel from the comfort of your home.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience:
Stonehenge at summer solstice is a unique blend of history, nature, and human connection. It’s a chance to stand where people have stood for millennia, united by the wonder of the solstice. So, embrace the adventure, and create memories that will last a lifetime!
