A Tarot Story of Action and Change

Within the tarot, the cards are grouped as the Major Arcana, Minor Arcana and Court Arcana. The Major Arcana are the most potent cards predicting major issues in life rather than everyday ups and downs. These cards begin with the Magician and end with the Fool. The balance of the deck make up the Minor Arcana, which are the four suits; Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Cards within the Minor Arcana generally refer to the events of everyday life. Each suit has ten numbered cards and four Court cards. These Court cards of all four suits together are known as the Court Arcana.

Within the Court Arcana are sixteen cards; the Knight, Page, Queen and King of each of the four suits; Wands, Cups, Swords & Pentacles. In readings, the Knights mark the beginning or end of a sequence of events.

When a Knight appears in your reading, a long-term situation or condition will suddenly shift. The Knights have an important purpose in readings because they are harbingers of change. Let’s look at each of the Knights, their symbols (Rider Waite deck) and interpretation.

Knight of Wands: Impulse and Adventure

  • The Wand: The wand in this card is alive and sprouting, which represents personal growth, inspiration, and the energy to pursue goals.
  • The Horse: The horse is rearing up ready to charge forward, suggesting a strong desire for movement, action, and progress.
  • The Salamander: The knight’s clothing is patterned with salamanders, which are associated with fire and transformation.
  • The Landscape: The landscape is barren and dry, with mountains, or potentially pyramids, in the distance. This suggests a journey into the unknown with the potential for adventure, challenges and obstacles.
  • The Color Yellow: The knight’s clothing is yellow, which is associated with intellect, positivity, and enthusiasm.

These elements combine to create a powerful image of a young, energetic individual who is ready to embark on a journey of adventure and self-discovery. The Knight of Wands often points to a crossroads in life related home, work and/or partnerships where consequential life decisions will be made.

Knight of Cups: Romance and Dreams

  • The Cup: The knight is carrying a cup, or chalice, as if he will be presenting it upon his arrival. This cup, like the suit itself, represents emotions, love, and spiritual connection.
  • The Horse: The horse appears calm and peaceful, with a formal gait and it’s head tilted down, suggesting a dream and gentle nature.
  • The Dolphin: The knight’s clothing is decorated with dolphins, which are symbolic of water, emotions, and intuition.
  • The Landscape: Water and nature create a peaceful and serene background, suggesting a connection to emotions, imagination, and the spiritual world.
  • The Winged Helmet: The knight’s helmet is adorned with the Wings of Hermes and represent a connection with divine creativity.
  • The Color Blue: The knight’s clothing is blue, representing peace, tranquility, and spirituality.

These elements combine to create a powerful image of a young, imaginative individual who is deeply connected to their emotions and spirituality. The Knight of Cups often points to advancement and branching out, leading to new paths through education or public relations. This card can also indicate opportunities to socialize and travel that will lead to advancement for the querent.

Knight of Swords: Impulsiveness and Action

    • The Sword: The knight holds a sword, which represents intellect, logic, powerful thinking and the ability to slice through confusion.
    • The Horse: The horse is charging forward in rapid motion, indicating a strong desire for action and progress.
    • The Eagle: The eagle, associated with air, intellect, and keen observation, adorns the knight’s clothing.
    • The Landscape: The background is turbulent and stormy, implying challenge and conflict; situations requiring decisiveness and action.
    • The Color Gray: The knight’s clothing is gray, which is associated with neutrality, logic, and objectivity.

These elements combine to create a powerful image of a young, intellectual individual who is ready to take action. The Knight of Swords often points to life altering situations and being swept up to a new level of prominence, be it in business and finances or love and partnerships. Navigating these situations for the best possible outcome requires the quick thinking and decisive energy of this Knight.

Knight of Pentacles: Practicality and Achievement

      • The Pentacle: The pentacle held by this knight represents achievements in material wealth, stability, and practical matters.
      • The Horse: The horse appears calm and steady, indicating a practical and grounded nature.
      • The Bull: The bull on the knight’s clothing is symbolic of earth, stability, and physical strength.
      • The Landscape: The background is green and lush, showing fields and crops. This demonstrates a connection to the earth, practical matters, and stability.
      • The Color Green: The knight’s clothing is green, associated with growth, stability, and practicality.

These elements combine to create a powerful image of a young, practical individual who is focused on achieving their goals. The Knight of Pentacles often points to decisions or situations related to the manifestation of the practical elements of living; property, family, financial stability and success.

The next time you see a Knights in a Tarot reading, know that a long-term condition will suddenly change. This could be the closing of a door leading to a new direction or a step up the ladder broadening our opportunities. Knights mark the beginning or end of a sequence of events.

Keep in mind that when interpreting the Knights, as with every card in the tarot, it’s important to consider their position in the spread, as well as the surrounding cards, to gain a deeper understanding of their meaning.
