Unveiling the Spooky Superstitions of Friday the 13th

For many, Friday the 13th conjures images of black cats, broken mirrors, and a general sense of impending doom. But where does this fear of this particular date originate? Buckle up, because the answer is a chilling mix of biblical stories, Norse mythology, and a dash of historical misfortune.

The Unlucky Number 13:

Dislike of the number 13 seems to predate Friday the 13th itself. In many cultures, 12 is seen as a complete number (think 12 months, 12 zodiac signs, etc.), making 13 the unwelcome outsider. Norse mythology offers a story about 12 gods having a dinner party. The uninvited trickster god, Loki, showed up as the 13th guest and caused chaos, leading to the death of another god.

The Last Supper and Friday’s Woes:

Christianity may have cemented the idea of 13 being unlucky. The Last Supper, where Jesus dined with his 12 disciples, had 13 people present (including Judas, the betrayer). This event, followed by Jesus’ crucifixion on a Friday (Good Friday), associated both Friday and the number 13 with misfortune.

Knights Templar and Friday’s Final Blow?

Some theories link Friday the 13th to a historical event. On Friday, October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar, a powerful religious order. This association, however, is likely coincidental and solidified the superstition much later.

Friday the 13th: Fact or Fiction?

There’s no scientific evidence to suggest Friday the 13th is truly unlucky. In fact, studies have shown no increase in accidents or negative events on any given Friday the 13th, not like the elevated energies that awake during a full moon, but that’s a different blog post. Yet, the superstition persists, fueled by popular culture and media portrayals like the “Friday the 13th” horror movie franchise.

Facing Friday the 13th Fearlessly:

Whether you view Friday the 13th with trepidation or amusement, understanding its origins can be fascinating. If you do find yourself feeling a bit unlucky, remember, it’s just a date! And for those who believe it’s just a silly superstition, good for you. Still, we don’t suggest you search out ladders to walk under or black cats to cross your path. No reason to press your luck, even if you do love to tempt fate!
