Celebrating the Autumn Equinox

Tomorrow, September 22, is Mabon, the second harvest festival and one of the eight Wiccan sabbats. This is the pagan celebration of the Autumnal Equinox, where day and night are equal. After tomorrow, the days will shorten until the Winter Solstice on Sat, Dec 21, 2024, 3:19 a.m. CST.

With the transition into this season, where days shorten and nights lengthen, Mabon is a time for reflection, gratitude, and celebrating the bounty of the earth. Here are some rituals you can incorporate into your Mabon celebrations:

  • Apple Harvest Ritual: Apples, a quintessential symbol of the second harvest, can be used in a beautiful ritual thanking the deities for a fruitful season. Gather apples with loved ones, expressing gratitude for their growth and nourishment. You can then use them in baking, crafting, or simply enjoying their crisp taste.
  • Balancing Ritual: Mabon celebrates the day with equal parts light and dark. This balance invites introspection. Light a candle and spend time reflecting on areas of your life that need balancing. Do you have too much work and not enough play? Is your social life out of sync with your solitude? This is the time to make adjustments and create harmony within yourself.
  • Mabon Altar: Create a sacred space on your altar to honor the season. Include symbols of the harvest like apples, grapes, pumpkins, and gourds and seasonal herbs like sage, thistle and marigold. Decorate with autumn leaves, pine cones, and acorns. You can also incorporate crystals such as amber and citrine representing abundance and prosperity, jasper for grounding and obsidian for release of negative energy and protection.

No Mabon celebration is complete without a feast! Gather loved ones and enjoy delicious foods representative of the season. Remember, the most important aspect of Mabon is expressing gratitude for the harvest and embracing the changing seasons. So light some candles, perform a meaningful ritual, and savor the bounty of the earth!

Light and Love.❤
