The Importance of Looking Beyond the Surface
What’s Thanksgiving weekend without a movie? Today, I had the pleasure of watching the Wicked part 1 movie, and I was absolutely blown away. This cinematic masterpiece not only captivated me with its stunning visuals and incredible performances but also offered a pointed lesson about the importance of looking beyond the surface.

The story of the Wicked Witch of the West, as we know it from The Wizard of Oz, is one that has been ingrained in our collective consciousness for generations. However, Wicked invites us to reconsider our preconceived notions and delve into the complexities of the characters. It reminds us that there is often a deeper, more nuanced story behind the villain’s facade.
By exploring the backstories of characters like Elphaba and Glinda, Wicked teaches us the value of empathy and understanding. It encourages us to question our assumptions and to seek out the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. In a world that often judges people at face value, this is a powerful message that we can all benefit from.
As we navigate the upcoming hectic holiday season, stress, anxiety and overwhelm can get the best of us, and it can be all too easy to forget about the importance of empathy and understanding. By taking a moment to step back and consider the perspectives of others, we can cultivate a more compassionate and inclusive holiday spirit.
Here are a few ways to integrate the message from Wicked into your holiday celebrations:
- Practice active listening. When interacting with friends, family, and co-workers, truly listen to what they have to say. Be open to their perspectives and avoid making assumptions based on their appearance or initial impressions.
- Challenge your own biases. Take a moment to reflect on your own preconceived notions and biases. Are there any assumptions you make about others that you need to address?
- Seek out diverse perspectives. Make an effort to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Learn about their experiences and perspectives.
- Be kind and compassionate. Treat others with kindness and respect, regardless of their differences. A little empathy can go a long way in building stronger relationships and creating a more positive holiday experience for everyone.
By embracing the message of Wicked, we can create a holiday season that is filled with compassion, understanding, and a spirit of togetherness.
What practices do you have to retain your empathy and understanding for others? Please share in the comments.
