The Alchemy of Memories

Airplane taking off over the city skyline.

A Flight of Fancy

Yesterday, I had the joy of sharing a magical event with my son. We embarked on a 45-minute airplane ride over the breathtaking Chicago skyline as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the clouds in hues of orange and pink. The plane ride was his big Christmas gift this year, and I knew he would love it, but I didn’t realize just how much I would too.

My son, a charming 19-year-old with autism, possesses an extraordinary love for flight. The thrill of soaring through the air, the sensation of moving through the sky, and the mesmerizing spectacle of the world shrinking below – these are experiences that bring him immense joy. However, due to the complexities of travel with his disability, such flights are infrequent and special occurrences.

As we ascended, I watched my son’s face illuminate with excitement. His eyes, wide with wonder, scanned the runway, his mind undoubtedly filled with a thousand fleeting thoughts and emotions. In that moment, I realized the profound importance of creating these memories, these shared experiences that transcend the limitations of language and logic.

These moments, however fleeting, become the threads that we later weave into our personal story. They are the echoes of joy, the whispers of love, and the enduring reminders of the beauty and wonder that exists within us all.

Perhaps, my son won’t recall the details of this flight. Maybe the vibrant colors of the sunset will fade from his memory. But I know, in my heart, that the essence of this experience, the feeling of shared joy and the love that bound us together, will forever reside within him.

And that, my friends, is the true magic of memory – not in the meticulous recollection of facts, but in the enduring resonance of love, joy, and the precious moments we share with those we cherish.
