Knowing Yourself and Your Moods
I went for a walk today, which I do everyday. But today it was easy for me to get motivated. Not only has there been a lot of chaos in my news feed, but yesterday marked the birthday of my brother who passed in 2023. Still, today I felt much more optimistic and motivated. A look out the window, and I quickly knew what was brightening my disposition. I am a fan of sunshine, blue skies and bright landscapes, and today is one of those days. Grey skies, like we’ve had for a portion of the day on and off for the past week have significantly contributed to a melancholy feeling, and this is the inspiration for today’s post.

In the journey of self-discovery, one of the most valuable tools we can cultivate is an understanding of our own inner landscape. Just as a gardener knows the soil, the sunlight, and the watering needs of their plants, so too should we understand the elements that nurture – or deplete – our emotional well-being. Knowing yourself, your triggers, and the subtle shifts in your moods is essential for navigating life with greater awareness and resilience.
We are all influenced by a myriad of factors, both internal and external. For some, like myself, the weather plays a significant role. Bright sunshine and blue skies can lift the spirits, while prolonged periods of grey can dampen the mood. It’s not just about acknowledging the change in weather; it’s about recognizing how that change affects you. For years, I’d feel a dip in my mood during cloudy days, experiencing feelings of anxiety, sadness, and a general sense of “blues,” without fully connecting it to the weather patterns. Once I made that connection, I could approach those feelings with more understanding and self-compassion. Knowing that “this too shall pass,” that the sun will eventually return, brings a sense of comfort and perspective.
Others may be more sensitive to the pace of their lives. A calendar overflowing with social events, while exciting, can trigger feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. Even positive experiences can become stressors if they disrupt our sense of balance. Conversely, some individuals may find their energy and joy fueled by social connection, and a few days of solitude, even if chosen, can lead to feelings of loneliness.
The key is to become an observer of your own inner world. Pay attention to the subtle cues your body and mind are giving you. When you notice a shift in your mood, take a moment to reflect. What might be contributing to this change? Is it the weather? Your schedule? Your social interactions? Your thoughts?
By understanding your personal triggers and recognizing the patterns in your emotional responses, you gain a sense of agency. You can begin to anticipate potential mood shifts and develop strategies for navigating them. This might involve adjusting your schedule, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or simply acknowledging and validating your feelings.
Self-knowledge is not a destination; it’s a journey. It requires ongoing curiosity, introspection, and a willingness to be honest with yourself. The more you understand your inner landscape, the better equipped you will be to navigate the ups and downs of life, and the more deeply you can appreciate the moments of joy, peace, and connection. This journey of self-discovery is a gift you give yourself, a pathway to greater well-being and a richer, more fulfilling life.
