A Shattering Revelation
We had a snow day today, my son’s school was closed and predictions were for a significant snow storm to come though the area. We did get some snow, but not nearly what was predicted. I spent some of my time watching a few of the 2025 prediction videos made by mediums and tarot readers from late December and early January. It’s no surprise that the Tower card came up more than once in these videos from every reader! Understanding this card is the inspiration for today’s post.

The Tower. Just the name evokes a sense of unease, a premonition of disruption. In the Rider-Waite Tarot deck, this card depicts a tall, imposing tower, struck by lightning and crumbling under the force of the blast. Figures are falling from its heights, their expressions a mix of terror and desperation. It’s a dramatic image, and one that often leaves readers feeling apprehensive. But the Tower isn’t simply a harbinger of doom. While it certainly signifies upheaval, it also represents necessary change, the dismantling of outdated structures, and the potential for profound growth.
Deciphering the Symbols:
The imagery of the Tower is rich with symbolism, each element contributing to its complex meaning:
- The Tower Itself: This represents established structures, beliefs, and ways of life. It can symbolize anything from societal institutions to personal belief systems, even the ego itself. Its height suggests a sense of pride or perhaps even arrogance, a structure built on foundations that may not be as solid as they appear.
- The Lightning Bolt: This is the catalyst for change, the sudden and unexpected force that shatters the existing order. It represents divine intervention, a powerful surge of energy that disrupts the status quo. It’s often a necessary shock, even if it feels destructive at the time.
- The Falling Figures: These represent the individuals clinging to the crumbling tower. They symbolize the parts of ourselves that resist change, the ego’s attempts to hold onto familiar structures even when they are no longer serving us. Their fall, while seemingly negative, is ultimately a liberation – a release from the constraints of the old.
- The Flames: Fire is a transformative symbol, representing purification and destruction. The flames engulfing the tower signify the burning away of the old, making way for the new. It’s a process that can be painful, but it’s essential for growth.
- The Number 16: In numerology, 16 reduces to 7 (1+6=7), a number associated with introspection, spiritual awakening, and seeking truth. This suggests that the upheaval brought by the Tower can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and the world.
Interpreting the Tower:
The Tower’s meaning is multifaceted and depends heavily on the context of the reading. However, some common interpretations include:
- Sudden and Unexpected Change: The Tower rarely gives a warning. It signifies sudden disruptions, often beyond our control, that can turn our world upside down.
- Destruction of Old Structures: This can refer to anything from a job loss or relationship breakup to a shift in personal beliefs or a dismantling of societal norms. It signifies the breakdown of systems that are no longer sustainable.
- Revelation and Truth: The Tower’s upheaval, while challenging, can bring us face-to-face with uncomfortable truths. It can expose the flaws in our foundations and force us to confront realities we’ve been avoiding.
- Ego Death: The Tower can represent the shattering of the ego, the dismantling of our self-constructed identity. While this can be a painful process, it’s often necessary for spiritual growth and self-discovery.
- Liberation and Freedom: Ultimately, the Tower’s destruction paves the way for something new to emerge. It signifies the potential for liberation from limiting beliefs, restrictive situations, and outdated structures. It’s a chance to rebuild on a more solid foundation, aligned with our authentic selves.
The Tower is a powerful card, and its appearance in a reading can be unsettling. However, it’s important to remember that destruction is often a necessary precursor to creation. The Tower reminds us that clinging to the old, even when it’s crumbling, only delays the inevitable.
Embracing change, even when it’s difficult, opens the door to new possibilities and a more authentic way of being. It’s a call to examine the foundations of our lives and to be willing to let go of what no longer serves us, so we can build something stronger and more meaningful in its place.
