Uncovering the Sadness Within

I’m currently enjoying Megan Dalla-Camina’s book, “Simple, Soulful, Sacred.” It’s broken into short, insightful chapters, each ending with a helpful affirmation, which I find really effective. Today’s chapter focused on how we, especially women, often get stuck in anger without digging deeper. Megan suggests that sadness is the flip side of anger, and looking for that sadness can help us move forward.

This idea really clicked with me, reminding me of something a psychologist friend told me during my divorce. My ex-husband’s intense anger felt overwhelming, but my friend explained that anger often masks fear, and fear often stems from sadness. Today’s post is about how understanding these emotions – anger, fear, and sadness – can be powerful tools for personal growth.

Anger is a powerful emotion that can be both destructive and constructive. It can be used to motivate us to fight for what we believe in, but it can also lead us down a path of self-destruction. If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of anger, it is important to understand that there is a deeper emotions beneath the surface. These emotion are often fear and sadness.

Sadness is a natural human emotion that we all experience. It is a way for us to process loss, grief, and disappointment. Fear is a byproduct of sadness and when we are feeling fearful or threatened, we respond in anger. This is the fight response in ‘fight or flight.’ When we are angry, we are often trying to mask our sadness.

If you are struggling with anger, it is important to take some time to explore the sadness that may be underlying it. Once you are able to identify and process your sadness, you will be able to move on from your anger.

Here are some tips for dealing with sadness:

  • Acknowledge your sadness. Don’t try to deny or suppress it.
  • Allow yourself to feel your sadness. Don’t try to bottle it up.
  • Talk to someone you trust about your sadness. Talking about your feelings can help you to process them.
  • Find healthy ways to express your sadness. This could include journaling, writing poetry, or listening to music.

Remember, sadness is a normal and healthy emotion. It is okay to feel sad.

If you are struggling with anger, it is important to seek professional help. A therapist can help you to understand the root of your anger and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
