Insights from Diverse Spiritual Traditions

Even though I write a blog about metaphysical topics, I am also a skeptic. My path to ”coming out’ as a tarot reader was a slow and steady journey that vacillated a good deal on what and how much of the other-world I believed to be true for myself. This applies to tarot, crystals, manifesting, etc. One thing I always take into consideration is the amount of time and the reach of different practices. For example, tarot has a centuries-long history and is practices throughout the world. Today’s topic – Angels, is similar.

I grew up and still attend a Lutheran church. Angels are included in our beliefs, after all, just yesterday we celebrated Easter, and Angels play a big role in the Easter story. I have Angel card decks and I have many books on Angels, so I wanted to explore the topic further.

For millennia, across cultures and spiritual traditions, humanity has acknowledged a benevolent presence, a guiding force often embodied by beings of light and grace: angels. These celestial messengers, intermediaries between the divine or source and the earthly, permeate our collective consciousness, offering comfort, wisdom, and a tangible connection to something greater than ourselves. While often associated with Abrahamic religions, the concept of angelic beings, in various forms and under different names, resonates far beyond the Judeo-Christian-Islamic sphere.

Let’s gently open the door to this fascinating realm and explore the diverse ways angels are perceived and honored around the world.

Beyond the Western Paradigm: Angelic Echoes in Other Faiths

The shimmering threads of angelic belief are woven into the fabric of many spiritual traditions:

  • Zoroastrianism: This ancient Persian religion speaks of Ahuras, benevolent divine beings created by Ahura Mazda (the Wise Lord). While not directly equivalent to the singular concept of an angel, these radiant entities, such as Vohu Manah (Good Purpose) and Asha Vahishta (Truth and Righteousness), act as divine messengers and protectors, guiding humanity towards righteousness. They share the role of intermediaries and embody divine attributes, much like angels in other faiths.
  • Hinduism: While Hinduism doesn’t have a direct parallel to the Western concept of angels, it features a vast pantheon of Devas (gods) and Devis (goddesses) who often act as messengers and carry out the will of the supreme deities. Certain figures, like Gandharvas (celestial musicians and messengers) and Apsaras (heavenly nymphs), possess ethereal qualities and serve divine purposes, echoing some of the functions attributed to angels.
  • Buddhism: In Buddhist cosmology, various celestial beings exist within different realms. While not always focused on direct intervention in the human world in the same way as angels, beings like Bodhisattvas (enlightened beings who postpone their own nirvana to help others) embody compassion and guidance, acting as spiritual mentors and protectors, a role that aligns with some aspects of angelic assistance.
  • Indigenous Traditions: Many indigenous cultures around the world have stories of spirit beings, often associated with nature or the ancestors, who can act as guides, protectors, and messengers. While their roles and forms differ significantly, the underlying belief in benevolent spiritual entities that interact with the human realm shares a common thread with the concept of angels.

Voices from Above: Notable Authors on Angels

For those seeking deeper understanding and connection with the angelic realm, several authors have illuminated their presence through insightful writings:

  1. Lorna Byrne: An Irish mystic who claims to see and communicate with angels since childhood. Her books offer personal accounts and insights into the angelic hierarchy and their role in our lives.
  2. Diana Cooper: Known for her extensive writings on angels, ascended masters, and the spiritual realms. Her work often explores the different realms of angels and their specific functions.
  3. Kyle Gray: A popular author and spiritual teacher who bridges traditional angel wisdom with contemporary spiritual practices. His books and decks offer accessible ways to connect with angelic energy.
  4. Haziel: Specializing in Kabbalistic Angelology, Haziel’s work delves into the 72 angels of the Kabbalah, their attributes, and their influence on human affairs. His writings offer a more esoteric perspective on angelic beings.

Embracing the Whispers

Whether you encounter them in the radiant Ahuras of Zoroastrianism, the benevolent Devas of Hinduism, or the familiar angels of Western traditions, the underlying message remains consistent: we are not alone. These celestial beings, in their various forms, offer a comforting reminder of the divine love and guidance that surrounds us. By opening our hearts and minds to their presence, we can receive the whispers of love and guidance they provide, leading us towards greater peace, purpose, and connection.
