An Easy to Understand Astrological Overview
Today’s post is all about Mercury Retrograde, but it’s written for an audience that is familiar with the term but not the details, because many tarot lovers are astrology fans too. If you have heard the phrases ‘going direct’ ‘mercury stations’, and more, but don’t know what they mean – this post is for you. 🙂
Imagine you’re driving on a highway. You’re cruising along at a steady pace when suddenly, a car zooms past you. It seems like it’s moving backward, but it’s actually just going faster than you. That’s essentially what happens with Mercury Retrograde.
Mercury is the planet associated with communication, technology, and travel. It orbits the Sun much faster than Earth. About three or four times a year, Mercury appears to be moving backward in the sky from our perspective. This is called retrograde motion. It’s an optical illusion caused by the different speeds at which Earth and Mercury orbit the Sun.
Key Terms to Know
- Retrograde: This simply means that a planet appears to be moving backward in its orbit when viewed from Earth.
- Direct Motion: The normal forward movement of a planet in its orbit.
- Stationary: The point at which a planet appears to stop moving before changing direction. This happens just before and after a retrograde period.
- Pre-Shadow: The period of time before a planet stations retrograde.
- Post-Shadow: The period of time after a planet stations direct.
What to Expect During Mercury Retrograde
While Mercury Retrograde doesn’t cause chaos, it can amplify existing challenges. You might experience more:
- Miscommunications: Emails might go astray, phone calls could be dropped, or misunderstandings might arise.
- Technical Difficulties: Computers, phones, and other devices might act up.
- Travel Delays: Flights might be delayed, luggage lost, or unexpected detours encountered.
- Revisiting the Past: Old friends, projects, or issues might resurface.
Is Mercury Retrograde All Bad?
Not necessarily! While it can be challenging, it’s also a time for reflection, review, and revision. It’s a great opportunity to:
- Reevaluate plans and projects
- Reconnect with old friends
- Slow down and focus on inner work
Navigating Mercury Retrograde
While there’s no guaranteed way to avoid all the potential pitfalls of Mercury Retrograde, here are some tips:

- Double-Check Everything: Read emails and contracts carefully.
- Be Patient: Allow extra time for travel and communication.
- Embrace Flexibility: Be open to changes in plans.
- Practice Mindfulness: Stay grounded and centered.
- Be Aware: Know that snags, snafus and that ‘odd call from your ex’ are likely to happen during a retrograde, so you can more easily take it in stride.
