Arthur Edward Waite: A Life Devoted to the Occult
In our previous post Mysterious Origins – 10 Key Figures in Tarot, we introduced several individuals who contributed to the vibrant history of Tarot. Today’s blog covers the life and work of one of the most influential figures in Tarot’s evolution: Arthur Edward Waite.
Often overshadowed by the vibrant imagery of Pamela Colman Smith, Waite was the intellectual force behind the Rider-Waite-Smith (aka Rider-Waite Tarot or RWS Tarot) deck, a cornerstone of modern Tarot. His fascination with the occult and symbolism led him to explore the depths of Tarot, transforming it from an esoteric tool into a more accessible form of divination.
A Life Devoted to the Occult
Waite was a man of contradictions. A devout Christian, he was also deeply immersed in the world of mysticism and the occult. This unique blend of spirituality and esotericism shaped his approach to Tarot. He believed that the cards held profound spiritual and philosophical truths, and that they could serve as a path to self-discovery and enlightenment.
Waite’s extensive knowledge of occult symbolism and mythology was invaluable in crafting the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. He meticulously outlined the card meanings and symbolism, providing a framework that has been interpreted and expanded upon by countless Tarot readers over the decades.
The Birth of a Classic
While Waite’s contributions to the deck were primarily conceptual, his collaboration with the talented artist Pamela Colman Smith brought his vision to life. Smith’s evocative imagery captured the essence of Waite’s ideas, creating a deck that resonated with people on a profound level.
The Rider-Waite-Smith deck revolutionized Tarot in several ways:
- Standardized Imagery: Unlike earlier Tarot decks, which often featured obscure or courtly figures, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck employed easily recognizable symbols and scenes. This made it more accessible to a wider audience.
- Narrative Power: The deck’s imagery tells stories, making it easier for readers to connect with the cards on an emotional level.
- Enduring Popularity: The deck’s universal appeal has ensured its enduring popularity, making it a staple in the collections of Tarot enthusiasts worldwide.
Waite’s legacy extends far beyond the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. His writings on occult subjects, including Tarot, continue to inspire and inform students of the esoteric arts. By making Tarot more accessible and understandable, he played a pivotal role in popularizing this ancient form of divination.
For additional information on the symbolism of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck in greater detail, take a look at our earlier post: The Rider Waite Tarot.
This is my favorite deck to use, in particular, I love it for reading for others because I explain the imagery and symbolism during Divination to help communicate the meanings of each card. Share in the comments which deck you like to read from and why you like it!
