Understanding Your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs

I am currently taking an online class in astrology which is the inspiration for today’s post. I have had an affinity for astrology for a very long time, having been introduced to it in my 20’s by a close friend. She gave me the name of her astrologer, I visited once and was hooked! You can read more about how she impacted my tarot practice and metaphysical journey in this earlier post My Personal Encounters with Divination.

If you want to learn a little more about yourself using astrology, it all starts with your birth or natal chart. You can print one for free at Astro.com. You will need your birthday, where you were born and the time you were born. This information will provide you with your sun sign (most of us know that), your rising sign or ascendant and your moon. Understanding these three placements can offer valuable insights into your personality and life path

What is Your Sun Sign?

Your sun sign, often referred to as your “zodiac sign,” is determined by the position of the sun in the sky at the time of your birth. It’s considered the most prominent sign in your birth chart and often represents your core personality traits and life goals.

What is Your Moon Sign?

Your moon sign reveals your emotional nature and how you respond to the world around you. It’s associated with your inner self, your habits, and your nurturing instincts.

What is Your Ascendant or Rising Sign?

Your rising sign, also known as your ascendant, is determined by the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. It represents your outward persona and how you present yourself to the world.

Your Saturn Return: A Significant Life Transition

Saturn, the planet of structure, discipline, and responsibility, plays a crucial role in your birth chart. One of the most significant astrological events in your life is your Saturn Return, which occurs approximately every 28-30 years.

During your Saturn Return, you’re likely to experience a major life transition or transformation. This period can be a time of introspection, reassessment, and personal growth. You may be called upon to let go of old patterns and embrace new beginnings.

I am currently in my second Saturn Return, which is something I picked up in my class. In my first Saturn Return, I got divorced and my life focus really shifted to my career from family. It wasn’t on purpose – my deepest desire has always been to be a mother, but it was a valuable shift for my growth. In my current Saturn Return, I am pivoting from career and finally getting the time and support to focus on my family. Funny how all things work out (for our highest good).

A preliminary word of warning, if you print your chart, don’t be overwhelmed. Astrology is a complex subject, and these are just a few basic concepts. You will see all the planets in your chart and lots of information that you won’t find above. But with these three placements, you may at least get a better picture of yourself and a desire to go deeper. If you aren’t interested in learning all about astrology yourself, like I had originally been, consider consulting with a professional astrologer. Find a good one through reviews and ideally personal connection. If you have an experience similar to my own, you won’t regret it!

Light and Love. ❤️
