DIY: Smudge Spray

What is Smudge Spray? Smudge spray is a convenient and smokeless alternative to the traditional practice of smudging, which involves burning sacred plants like sage to cleanse and purify. Smudge sprays are made with a variety of ingredients, including essential oils, herbs, and crystals, and can be used to remove negative energy, create a positive atmosphere, and establish energetic protective boundaries. Today’s post is a simple recipe to make smudge spray. Once you get the hang of it, you can play around with the ingredients, to craft a personalized smudge spray that resonates with your spirit.

Ingredients for Smudge Spray

  • 2 cups distilled or spring water, or use your moon water
  • 1/2 cup vinegar* to ward off evil
  • 8 black peppercorns to ward off evil
  • 2 to 3 large sprigs of fresh rosemary for protection
  • 1 to 2 cinnamon sticks for joy and protection
  • 8 whole cloves to invite in positive energy

Instructions

  1. Gather your ingredients: Collect all the necessary ingredients for your smudge spray.
  2. Prepare a spray bottle: Clean your spray bottle and let it air dry in the sunlight to remove any residual energy.
  3. Add the herbs and spices: Add the peppercorns, rosemary, cinnamon sticks and cloves to the bottle.
  4. Add vinegar: Add the vinegar to the herbs and spices. *You can also substitute witch hazel for vinegar.
  5. Add water: Add the water of your choice to the bottle.
  6. Shake well: Shake the bottle vigorously to combine the ingredients.
  7. Let it sit: Allow the mixture to sit for at least 24 hours to infuse the water with the properties of the other ingredients.
  8. Use: Shake the bottle before each use. Lightly spray the smudge spray around the space or person you want to cleanse.
