How to Use Each Phase with Moon Mapping
In yesterday’s post Moon Mapping, I introduced the concept of Moon Mapping and the eight distinct phases of the Moon. Today, we’ll take a deeper look at each of these phases and explore how they can help guide your personal journey.

1. New Moon – Beginnings, Intention Setting
The New Moon is the perfect time for setting intentions and initiating new projects. Representing new beginnings, the New Moon marks a fresh start and invites you to focus on what you want to bring into your life. It’s a time of introspection and planting seeds — whether for personal goals, creative endeavors, or spiritual growth. During this phase, take time to reflect on your desires and write down your goals for the upcoming cycle.
2. Waxing Crescent – Growth, Planning
As the Moon begins to grow, the Waxing Crescent phase encourages you to take action and start turning your intentions into plans. This is a time of steady growth, where the energy is right for laying the groundwork for your goals. You may feel a sense of momentum building, so focus on planning the practical steps needed to manifest your dreams. It’s also a time to nurture the early stages of whatever you’ve begun during the New Moon phase.
3. First Quarter – Challenge, Decision Making
The First Quarter Moon represents a period of action and decision-making. It’s often a time when obstacles arise or when you face difficult choices that require clarity and commitment. The energy of this phase pushes you to confront any challenges that may be blocking your progress. If you’ve encountered resistance or doubt, use this phase to affirm your commitment and stay focused. It’s a time to face difficulties head-on, knowing that overcoming them will bring you closer to your goals.
4. Waxing Gibbous – Refinement, Expansion
During the Waxing Gibbous phase, the Moon’s light is growing stronger, symbolizing expansion and refinement. This is a time to fine-tune your plans, adjust your approach, and expand your efforts. You may find that opportunities for growth and development present themselves, so stay open to new possibilities. As you prepare for the Full Moon, this phase supports deepening your efforts and making sure that what you’ve started is ready to blossom.
5. Full Moon – Culmination, Illumination
The Full Moon is the most powerful phase of the lunar cycle, symbolizing the peak of energy and illumination. It’s a time of completion, when the intentions set during the New Moon phase come to fruition. The Full Moon illuminates hidden truths and emotions, bringing clarity and insight into your life. This is a powerful time for reflection, celebration, and release. Anything that no longer serves you — whether it’s a belief, habit, or relationship — can be let go of during this phase.
6. Waning Gibbous – Gratitude, Sharing
Following the intensity of the Full Moon, the Waning Gibbous phase invites you to reflect on what you’ve accomplished and express gratitude. This is a time of sharing your wisdom, knowledge, and experiences with others. You might feel a sense of completion, where the focus shifts from personal growth to sharing what you’ve learned or manifested. It’s also a good time for teaching, mentoring, or collaborating.
7. Last Quarter – Release, Letting Go
The Last Quarter Moon is a time of release, clearing, and surrender. This phase is about letting go of what no longer aligns with your path. Whether it’s outdated beliefs, unhealthy habits, or relationships that drain your energy, the Last Quarter Moon offers an opportunity to cleanse and release. This phase prepares you for the next cycle, allowing space for new opportunities to emerge. Use this time for introspection and emotional clearing.
8. Waning Crescent – Rest, Reflection
As the Moon wanes towards the New Moon, the Waning Crescent phase invites you to rest, reflect, and recharge. This is a time of slowing down and turning inward. It’s the ideal phase for quiet contemplation, meditation, and spiritual renewal. Reflect on the past lunar cycle and assess what you’ve learned. Allow yourself time to rest and prepare for the new beginnings of the upcoming New Moon.
The first step in moon mapping is understanding the energy of each moon phase. Tomorrow, I will write about how to create your own moon map to align yourself with the significant energy of the moon. Don’t miss the next post!
