Tips for Self-Discovery

For quite some time, I’ve been struggling to journal and yet I know I need to write for my personal benefit beyond doing my daily blog post. Journaling is a wonderful tool for self-discovery, reflection, and manifestation. But sometimes, the pen just won’t move, or in my case – I don’t even pick it up. If you’ve experienced this, you’re not alone (obviously), so after a little research, I am sharing some tips I found to get myself started.

Journaling for personal benefit.

Journaling blocks are a common hurdle, but they don’t have to be permanent. Here’s how to gently nudge yourself back into the flow:

1. Release the Pressure:

Forget about perfect prose or profound insights. Journaling isn’t about creating a literary masterpiece; it’s about connecting with yourself. Let go of expectations and simply allow whatever comes up to flow onto the page. Treat it like a conversation with your soul, no judgment allowed.

2. Start Small and Simple:

Don’t feel like you have to write pages. Even a few sentences can be transformative. Try prompts like: “Today, I feel…” or “Three things I’m grateful for are…” or even “I am thinking about…” If words feel overwhelming, draw, doodle, or use symbols.

3. Change Your Environment:

Sometimes, a change of scenery can spark inspiration. Try journaling outdoors, in a cozy cafe, or in a quiet corner of your home. Light a candle, play calming music, or use essential oils to create a sacred space for your writing.

4. Use Prompt Cards or Apps:

If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, try using journaling prompt cards or apps. These can provide a starting point and help you explore different aspects of yourself.

5. Free Writing/Stream of Consciousness:

Just write. Don’t censor yourself, don’t worry about grammar, and don’t even lift your pen from the page (if you can manage). This technique allows your subconscious to surface, revealing hidden thoughts and feelings.

6. Focus on Sensations:

Instead of trying to analyze your thoughts, focus on your physical sensations. What do you feel in your body? Are you tense, relaxed, energized? Describing your sensations can help you connect with your present moment and bypass the mental chatter.

7. Reframe “Block” as “Pause”:

Instead of viewing it as a block, consider it a pause. Your inner self may need a moment to process or integrate something before moving forward. Be patient and compassionate with yourself.

8. Consider your tools:

Sometimes a new pen, or a new journal, can be enough to get the creative juices flowing.

9. Schedule It:

Just like any other healthy habit, scheduling time for journaling can help you stay consistent. Even if it’s just for 5 minutes, setting aside a regular time can help you break through the initial resistance.

Journaling is a journey, not a destination. Be gentle with yourself, experiment with different techniques, and trust that your inner voice will eventually find its way onto the page.

Do you journal? Do you have any tips for others suffering from writer’s block? Please share in the comments.
