Gentle Steps Towards Unlocking Shadow Magic
Moon water is a staple in many spiritual toolkits, including mine! I’ve written about it many times, even in this post, How to Make Moon Water. I love moon water because it carries a gentle, nurturing, and intuitive energy. But when an eclipse rolls around, a common question arises: Can I leave my jar outside tonight, or is eclipse water a different animal entirely?
While both utilize the power of the night sky, their energetic signatures, intentions, and magical uses could not be more distinct.
Standard Moon Water: The Energy of Flow and Alignment
Traditional moon water is created by exposing pure water to the light of a specific lunar phase (most commonly the Full Moon). The Moon acts as a cosmic mirror, reflecting the Sun’s light and channeling soft, steady, and subconscious energy.
- The Vibe: Nurturing, harmonious, restorative, and intuitive.
- The Purpose: Amplifying manifestation, cleansing tools, boosting self-care rituals, or enhancing daily intuition.
- How to Use: Add it to ritual baths, use it to water plants for growth, spray it around your space for peaceful vibrations, or drink a sip during daily meditation.
Standard moon water aligns you with the natural cycles of growth, fruition, and gentle release. It is safe, predictable, and comforting energy.
Eclipse Water: The Energy of Shadow, Fate, and Sudden Shift
Eclipse water is crafted during a lunar or solar eclipse—a time when celestial bodies cast literal and figurative shadows over one another. It is made the same way; only the timing is different, leading to profoundly different energies being harnessed for later use. In spiritual traditions, eclipses disrupt the normal flow of cosmic energy. They represent wildcards, quantum leaps, hidden truths, and sudden endings.
- The Vibe: Volatile, intense, transformative, and chaotic.
- The Purpose: Shadow work, drastic banishing, breaking stubborn karmic cycles, or severe severance spells.
- How to Use: Use sparingly in rituals where you need to burn bridges, sever attachments – especially toxic ones – or tear down old structures to make room for radical change.
Because eclipse energy is notoriously unpredictable, many practitioners advise against drinking eclipse water or using it for gentle self-care. Instead of building slowly like standard moon water, eclipse water acts as a spiritual wrecking ball.

Special Focus: The Late August Lunar Eclipse in Pisces
The upcoming partial lunar eclipse on the 27/28th (depending on where you are) offers a unique cosmic opportunity. Where I’m located, just outside of Chicago, the eclipse will be at its greatest eclipse point at 11:13 p.m. CDT on the 27th, according to the US Naval Observatory (refer to this post). Positioned along the Virgo-Pisces axis and square to disruptive Uranus, this particular eclipse triggers deep emotional release, sudden intuitive epiphanies, and the clearing of old illusions.
Water that is charged under this specific event will carry potent cathartic and transitional energy. Because Pisces is a fluid water sign ruled by Neptune, this eclipse acts as a cosmic drain cleaning—dissolving old emotional baggage, broken dreams, or spiritual fog that has held you back. Charging water during this transit creates a powerful elixir specifically tuned for releasing what no longer serves you. Use this batch solely for cleansing rituals aimed at washing away grief, surrendering control, or closing a heavy chapter of your life so you can cross into a new one.
I will be making eclipse water this week, but I’m going to be sure to label that jar. I wouldn’t want to make some smudge sprays to sell and unwittingly fill them with such a potent and transformative base! Will you be making eclipse water to capture this energy?
Light and Love ❤ here’s to the end of this current eclipse cycle!
